Sir Knight John L. Tyson died on Wednesday December 7, 2022 in Onley, VA.

The funeral for our departed brother Sir Knight John L. Tyson of Eastern Shore Council 6963 will be held at Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 25236 Coastal Boulevard, Onley, VA 23418 on Tuesday December 13, 2022. The viewing will be at the church at 10:00 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. There will not be a Chalice Ceremony or KofC Honor Guard from the Assembly; there will be a military Honor Guard provided graveside for burial. Following burial there will be fellowship at the Sage Diner at 1:30 PM.

Any Sir Knights who attend are requested to simply wear a dark suit, conservative or KofC tie, and white shirt.

We request continued prayers not only for repose SK John’s soul, but for Lady Bernadette and the entire Tyson family during their bereavement

Gregory Scott Coleman passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 30, 2021. Greg was born on Long Island, New York on July 2, 1958, and moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 1979 with his parents, Walter and Emma Coleman, both of whom predeceased him.

For many years, Greg was a constant figure in the town of Onley, Virginia, either riding his bike or walking to McDonald’s for the “usual.” He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and became an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Every year his fellow knight, Dom Sorrito, would take Greg to the state Knights of Columbus convention. Greg never met a stranger, and his outgoing personality brought a smile to all he met. Greg never forgot a birthday and called the radio station to have everyone he knew recognized on their special day. He knew Santa was real and the highlight of his Christmas was always a visit to see Santa.

Greg loved trains, and when he lived in Onley, he would go nightly to the tracks to wave at the engineer. Every now and then, the train would stop, and Greg would get a ride to Greenbush in the engine cab. What a thrill! One of his biggest disappointments occurred when the Eastern Shore Railroad ceased to run.

Greg was a frequent competitor in the Special Olympics. The 50-yard dash was his specialty, and he had the gold medals to prove it. He was so proud of those medals and loved showing them to all of his friends. Greg also loved to sing. TV shows today are quite impressive, but Greg’s favorite were the old black and white shows like “I Love Lucy.” Thank God for TV Land.

In addition to his parents, Greg was predeceased by his brother, Walter. He is survived by his sisters, Gerry Reilly of Onancock, VA, and Kathy Graziano of Richmond, VA, as well as a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, and friends. The family would like to thank Deborah Weatherly, Pam Savage, Ernest Upshur, Christa Smith, and the many other caregivers who were so wonderful to him during his group home years. Greg was one of a kind and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held at the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Thursday, January 6, 2022 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Onley, VA, Friday, January 7, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with interment following at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery. Reception information will be announced.

Richard F. Guevin, 82, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away on October 31, 2021.

Born in Westbrook, ME, he is the son of the late Armand and Irene Guevin. He retired honorably as a PN1 from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service. He was a member of the Catholic Church of Saint Mark, Knights of Columbus Council 10515, and Fr. Habets Assembly 1505.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa L. Guevin; his daughter, Karen Daigel; sister, Muriel Guevin and brothers, Norman and Donald Guevin. Left to cherish his memory: a daughter, Michelle Fuller and her husband, Michael; two brothers, Maurice and Gilbert Guevin; grandchildren, Abbie Childress, Jacob Kreischer and his wife, Vijayalakshmi, and Sarah Pemberton; and four great-grandchildren, Rhyley Kreischer, Elizabeth Pemberton, Dillon Kreischer, and Jacob Kreischer, Jr.

The family will receive friends at the Catholic Church of Saint Mark on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 6:15 p.m. and Chalice Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. by Fr. Michael “Mike” Bennett, age 66, of Oklahoma City, passed away unexpectedly on September 2, 2021. Mike was born in Topeka, KS to William and Marilyn Bennett on June 22, 1955. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Rayment, on October 16, 1999, in Virginia Beach, VA. Mike loved spending time with family, playing pitch and traveling the world. He graduated from UNL and worked as a lifelong travel agent for Adventure Travel as operator and owner. Mike volunteered for the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation; he was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Travel Trust International and Optimist Club and President of the United Commercial Travelers Counsel 104.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; daughter, Sarah; grandchildren Brendon Michael, Kaidon Joshua, Adyson Jane; parents Bill and Marilyn Bennett; siblings Dan (Karla) Bennett; Colleen (Mike) Danahay; Kerry (Randy) Miller; Kathy (Blake) Collingsworth; Brian Bennett; Patrick (Nicole) Bennett and too many nieces and nephews to count; in-laws Donald Rayment, Mary Rayment (in memory) Delores Rayment; sisters, brothers, and in-laws; Bill Rayment; Beverly Farmer; Steve Rayment; Jane Rayment; Mark Rayment (in memory); Brian Rayment; John (Mandy) Rayment; Carol (Mark) Fleming;niece, Nicole (Ryan) Joerger; nephew, Johnny Rayment.

I am again sorry to announce the passing of another Sir Knight from our Assembly. Sir Knight Clovis “John” Schweers (Council 4632) passed away March 5th, 2021.

The visitation will be on Sunday, 14 March from 2 PM to 4 PM at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Home on Laskin Road. The funeral service will be at Rosemont Kellum Funeral Home at 0900 on Monday, Monday, March 15th with Internment at Rosewood Cemetery (with full military honors) following immediately after.

David G. Ray passed away peacefully on 2/27/21. Was born to Katherine H. Wilson and David J. Ray, (both deceased) in Newark NJ on May 20, 1939. Dave also had 2 younger brothers, Ed and John Ray, who also preceded him in death. He proudly served 20+ years in the US Navy beginning as a seaman recruit in boot camp to Boatswain 1st Class, made Chief and was selected for Warrant Officer in 1969 and then rose to the rank of Lieutenant after completing the Warrant Officer program. He was a decorated Viet Nam Veteran.

Dave married his childhood sweetheart, Alice Kinsella, in 1964 and had 56 loving years together. They had two beautiful daughters. Cathy Ropert who is in a loving relationship with Dave Hahne. And his younger daughter Terri Ray who died of cancer in 1999. He raised his granddaughter Tiffani Ray, after the death of his youngest daughter. He had 5 grandchildren and their spouses, Mitch and Myesha Ropert, Trina Ropert and her fiancé Rich Deyo, Justin and Teresa Ropert, Tiffani Ray and her life partner, Edward Black, and Sean Ropert. And 5 great grandchildren, Peyton Deyo, Bentley Ropert, Cooper Ropert, Victor McEwen and Asher Ropert. And numerous nieces and nephews.

He’s was a member of the Knights of Columbus from 1970 to present including a stint as Grand Knight of Council 4632 1999-2000. He towed the float “Santa Maria” in most of the parades enjoying transporting the Fourth Degree Knights who marched back to their cars afterwards. He loved being a Fourth Degree Knight himself. And also being a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

A viewing will be held at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Rd Virginia Beach, VA on Monday, March 8, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 1968 Sandbridge Rd., Virginia Beach at 10:00 AM, Tuesday March 9, 2021 with the interment following at Colonial Grove Memorial Park, 3445 Princess Anne Road Virginia Beach.

Was a member of St. Benedict Council and an Honorary Life Member of Fr. Habets Assembly.

With much regret I must inform you that Sir Knight Joseph F. Costello passed away on Christmas Day, the 25th of December.

Joe was an Honorary Life Member of Assembly 1505 and active member of Council 4632.  He moved out West to California to be close to his children.  A Funeral Mass for Joe will be held at 1100 (11 AM) on January 6th at the Ascension Catholic Church in San Diego. Sir Knight Costello will be interned at Miramar National Cemetery with full military honors between 2:30 and 3:00 PM on January 7th.

Stephen George Riley, Jr. 91, passed away in Norfolk, VA on Thursday, December 24, 2020.

Stephen was born in Rochester, New York to the late Stephen G. and Harriette Riley. He is predeceased by his first wife, Mary; daughter, Margaret Riley; sons, Stephen G. Riley, III, and Christopher S. Riley; daughter-in-law Mary Gatti Riley; son-in-law, C. Patrick Pitchford; grandson, Sean P. Riley; and brother, John M. Riley. Stephen was a 30-year US Navy veteran; he was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Chapter 4632.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Capetanakis Riley, son, Kevin M. Riley, Sr (Stacie), and daughters, Eileen P. MacDougall (Robert) and Kathleen R. Pitchford, stepchildren, Angela Phillips (Tench), Toni Sires, Nicholas Capetanakis (Christine), thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sisters Patricia Noce and Stephanie Riley and numerous nieces and nephews.

As a result of COVID, a Memorial Mass and internment in Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Peter Joseph Schuffels, the third child of Henry Conrad Schuffels and Catherine Duffy, was born on May 18, 1943, and entered eternal rest on October 23, 2018.

Peter grew up in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He went to school at Lancaster Elementary and Lancaster High School. He and his family attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he received his sacraments. Peter served four years in the United States Army as Tank Crewman and was stationed in Germany. He had a long and distinguished career at sea with the Military Sealift Command, from March 1979 to March 2005. He retired from MSC as a Chief Engineer.

Peters long and memorable career as a merchant seaman started at Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship, where he met his wife of 43 years, Zenaida. He worked through the ranks as an engineer for MSC. He served as Exchange Officer with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, where he and Zenaida spent two years in England. Upon returning from England, he served as Port Engineer for MSC in Norfolk, Virginia. From 2005 to 2011 he was employed by American Systems as Deputy PM-Mariners Affairs. He switched gears again in 2011, serving as the government fleet representative for the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (MEBA), until his retirement in 2013.

In retirement, Peter and Zenaida resided in Knotts Island, North Carolina. They were parishioners of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church and were very much involved in several church ministries. As a career in retirement, he worked at St. John the Apostle Catholic School cafeteria, as we good-humoredly call him as the “Lunch Lady.” He enjoyed this position very much, most especially, interacting with the school children. Peter could not help but be involved with his community. Being an avid motorcycle rider, he was a member of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. He also had a keen interest in history, especially combat warfare and historical campaigns which led him to become a docent at the Military Aviation Museum where he assisted in coordinating the military displays at the “Warbirds Over the Beach” air shows.

Peter, Uncle Peter, Pete, Chief, ChEng, Mr. Pete was loved and will be missed.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Thursday November 1, 2018 in HD Oliver Laskin Rd Chapel. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at St John the Apostle Catholic Church. Interment will be held at a later date in Massachusetts.

Anthony R Reade
CAPT Anthony R. Reade died on 30 Sep 2018, in Virginia Beach, Virginia at the age of 70, a victim of Leukemia. He was born in Dublin, Ireland on 7 Dec, 1947. Tony immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1954. In turn, he immigrated to the United States in Jan 1967 to join the United States Army. Tony served two tours in Vietnam as a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. Utilizing the GI Bill he attended College graduating from Florida State University. He then joined the United States Navy to pursue his dream to be a Naval Aviator.
In thirty years of Naval Service Tony served in six Squadrons to include Command of Fighter Squadron Thirty-Three. It was his unexpected and challenging duty to dis-establish his squadron. He went on to be Air Boss on the USS Independence in Japan, Operations Officer for Carrier Group Eight, and Chief of Staff for Cruiser Destroyer Group Twelve. His last tour was Commanding Officer, Fleet Area and Control Facility, Virginia Capes. Always preferring sea duty he deployed ten times on five different Aircraft Carriers.
His awards include the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, three Bronze stars for Valor, four Bronze Stars for Meritorious Achievement, two Purple Hearts, three Air Medals, three Navy Commendations with “V”, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (CIB) and numerous other awards.
He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine who had courageously battled Lung Cancer for seven years. He has a date in heaven with his “little Marine”, the greatest gift of his life. Both of them lived by three loyalties, Faith, Family and Country, not always in that order, but always foremost in their life.
Tony was a fervent Catholic active in his parish, quietly performing many tasks in support of his friend and priest, Father Rob Cole. Over time he held many leadership roles in the Knights of Columbus Council 13467. There are not enough words to thank all the friends and parishioners who visited him, fed him and aided him in his final months. God’s gift was to allow him to know when he would die so he could prepare spiritually.
CAPT Reade is survived by his sons Rob and Raymond. He was especially proud of his boys and their accomplishments and oh so grateful for their efforts to be with him as much as possible during his limited time left on earth.
The family would like to thank the staff at Virginia Oncology Associates, especially Dr. Michael Danso and his immediate staff. What these people do every day in caring for the cancer patients should never be taken for granted.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church, 1968 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach. Cremains will be interred at the Church and a reception will follow in the church commons.

Eugene H. Wurster

Virginia Beach – Eugene H. Wurster, 90, passed away on June 28, 2017. Eugene was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Eugene and Anastasia Wurster. He was a part of the greatest generation of WWII Navy Veterans when he signed up at the age of 17, and served his country proudly. Gene later joined Mobil Corporation, where he retired as General Auditor with over 30 years of dedicated service and traveled the world with the company. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Rubinich Wurster. He moved to Virginia Beach in 1989, and has been a long time member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Gene is survived by his wife of 32 years, Catherine A. Wurster, three children, Jeannine Sibert (Robert) of Virginia Beach, Christopher Wurster (Beth) of New York City, and John Kearns (Angela) of Virginia Beach, and four grandchildren, Russell, Jenna, Angel, and JP.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017, 2:00 PM at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.
