Subject: 2022 VETERANS DAY ACTIVITIES

Veterans Day Parade Participants and Supporters,

The Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations (HRCVO) will host the annual Tidewater Veterans Day Parade in Virginia Beach on Friday, 11 November 2022. The parade will begin at 9:00 AM. The parade route this year has changed and will start from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Atlantic Avenue and proceed up 17th Street, right turn onto Mediterranean Avenue, then a left turn onto 19th Street pass the Tidewater Veterans Memorial (across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center) ending at the DoubleTree Hotel.

For over thirty years, the HRCVO has been coordinating the Veterans Day Parade and associated events. Each year, one of the HRCVO member organizations co-sponsors the parade. This year the Sons of Confederate Veterans is the co-sponsor organization. In addition to the parade, a short ceremony is held at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial immediately following the parade and a luncheon honoring our Veterans is held at the DoubleTree Hotel at approximately 12:00 PM.

The Veterans Day Parade is sanctioned by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Veterans Day Committee and the Mayors of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach who sign a proclamation resolving that “citizens, businesses and organizations demonstrate due appreciation, admiration and respect for all veterans who have served our great nation”.

As usual, following the parade, there will be a ceremony at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial and a Luncheon at the DoubleTree Hotel (see attached).

Additional information can be found on the new HRCVO website: https://hrcvo.org/veterans-day-parade/.

Thank you to all who honored our Veterans and supported the 2021 Veterans Day Parade.

(More than 1000 photos from the 2021 parade can be found at https://hrcvo.org/photo-gallery/.)

Hope to see you on Veterans Day!

Mike Maliniak
Past President, HRCVO
Parade Coordinator

VETERANS DAY PARADE LINEUP -FRIDAY – 11 NOVEMBER 2022

HRCVO,

Thank you all for your support and patience during the preparations for the Veterans Day Parade on FRIDAY, 11 November.

Attached is the lineup, script, map of the bus route/parking, parade route and a diagram of the parking area (S3, S4 & S5 are now the Virginia Beach Athletic Center).

Show time for units in the parade is 8:30 AM at your staging point where you will check in with a Parade Marshal (wearing a yellow safety vest. Also look for a yellow and blue “Parade Marshal” sign). They will assist in lining up the units and coordinate their movement onto Atlantic Avenue.

Parade starts at 9:00 AM.

Please be patient as we work through that process. If for some reason you are running late, do not worry. The Parade Marshals will work you into the parade, even if it is not in your designated spot – no one will be left out.

Car Clubs providing vehicles for dignitaries should park in Lot #1 SOUTH (S1).

(Only vehicles supporting dignitaries – other car club vehicles should go to the parade staging area listed in the lineup).

Those riding in cars provided by HRCVO: Please be at the Virginia Beach Convention Center at 8:30 AM. You will be assigned a car in Lot #1 SOUTH and then lined up. At 8:40 AM, the VBPD Motorcycle Unit will escort you down to Atlantic Avenue for final staging. You should park in Lot #1 NORTH.

Those sitting on the Reviewing Stand or in VIP Seating may also use Lot #2 or Lot #3 NORTH.

*******The parade route has changed*******

The parade route has changed and will start from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Atlantic Avenue/16th Street and proceed up 17th Street, right turn onto BALTIC Avenue, then a left turn onto 19th Street past the Tidewater Veterans Memorial (across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center) ending at the DoubleTree Hotel.

—————————————————–

It is very important that 5th, 9th and 16th Streets remain clear.

—————————————————–

Specifically, for those arriving via bus:

BUSES:

BEGINNING AT 7:30 AM:

Units arriving in buses should drop their marchers off and then go to the Convention Center parking area.

Lots #3, #4 and #5 SOUTH are closed. Bus parking will be on the road that encircles Parking lots #2 & #3 NORTH.

——————————————————–

Access to the parade area will be restricted. VBPD will start closing off Atlantic Avenue and 19th Street to the general public at 7:15 AM.

General Parking will be available at the Convention Center except in the lots designated above.

The Convention Center will be open. We have requested that the Atlantic Avenue/17th Street (near Dairy Queen) Rest Rooms also be available that morning but since they are privately owned, they may be closed. Portable toilets will be staged.

——————————————————–

For safety reasons, nothing (i.e. candy) can be thrown into the crowd.

Please follow this prohibition strictly. We want everyone to have a nice time with no one being hurt or stopped by the VBPD for not cooperating.

Additionally, revving of motors, screeching tires/”peeling out” is unacceptable.

(You will not be invited to future parades.)

——————————————————–

THE PARADE DOES NOT END AT THE REVIEWING STAND!

Units will march past the Tidewater Veterans Memorial and continue marching to the Double Tree Hotel where they can disband.

Vehicles leaving the parade area can continue down 19th Street to Birdneck Road.

This will prevent backing up the parade as units relax and disband.

Cars carrying dignitaries should turn RIGHT immediately after the Reviewing Stand and then into Lot #1 NORTH where they will be directed to a debark area so their passengers can

safely move to their seating area.

———————————————————–

Current weather forecast is low 60’s degrees, sunshine with some clouds.

Additional info will be provided if there is inclement weather.

———————————————————–

********This year the parade will be live-streamed on WTKR.com********

———————————————————–

If you have any questions that morning, I will be at the Reviewing Stand but any Parade Marshall will try to help.

PLEASE LOOK FOR A PARADE MARSHAL. The VBPD is there for safety and traffic control – the police officers do NOT have parade details.

Prior to 11 November, please call if you need further assistance. I may be out finalizing details but will call you back. I will also check email.

Thank you again for your efforts to honor our Veterans.

Hope to meet you in person at some point.

Thanks,

Mike

Parade Participants and Supporters,

There have been some slight modifications to the parade lineup and bus drop off route (please see attached);

– Drop off area has been moved to between 8th Street and 9th Street.

– Buses may enter using 5th Street. Turn left on Atlantic and drop off between 8th Street and 9th Street.
– Buses must exit Atlantic at 9th Street. 9th Street becomes Norfolk Avenue.

Thanks,
Mike
